What Do We Do?
Is Sustainability now the key to corporate success?
Eco Guardians an Australian company with its catchphrase “Sustainability by Design“ certainly think so.
The company’s mantra is to provide sustainable solutions to a range of problems that today’s businesses face with their environmental obligations. “The environment should not be treated as a dumping ground, “ says Eco Guardians founding director Paul Moynes, who along with fellow directors Doug Wilson and David Berry, have become a formidable trio who aim to take their Melbourne-based business on to the world stage. Utilising their extensive experience they have sourced or developed solutions to the most common issues associated with waste water and organic waste going to landfill.
Founded four years ago their initial success was built on the Grease Guardian a product developed in Northern Ireland to remove grease from waste water. It automatically removes fats, oil and grease generated by cooking and cleaning processes in restaurants and commercial kitchens making it easy to recycle. So effective in fact, it can replace grease traps, which have to be pumped out regularly, though many premises also use it alongside existing grease traps to dramatically reduce the need for costly pump out programs.
Today thousands of Australian restaurants, hotel kitchens and National Supermarket chains use the Grease Guardian, and Eco Guardians is now crossing the Tasman with the product. Grease Guardians to some degree have created their own momentum, because so many are in use in Australia.
It is a growing requirement of Australia’s water authorities that commercial food premises must install screening devices to filter solid waste from wastewater. Eco Guardians developed and manufacture a range of highly durable stainless steel Drain Protectors to fit sinks, floors and floor troughs. In all cases, there is a removable stainless steel basket with a fixed, secondary stainless steel screen below it as commonly required by water authority codes. Recent tests with Sydney water proved just how effective these products are at reducing contaminants into their assets and the Southern Stand at the MCG is adopting them as part of the major redevelopment.
The organic waste problem presented its own challenges to find a truly sustainable solution, leading Eco Guardians to travel as far as South Korea to bring back the GaiaRecycle system. A unique and scalable treatment process it is suitable for organic waste streams from large scale such as food manufacturing and mining camps right down to the myriad of small restaurants in food friendly Melbourne. Reducing the volume processed to just 15% and recovering grey water for recycling remarkably the end product is also a biomass suitable for use as a soil amendment.
More recently Eco Guardians have launched Veritech Filtration in Australia. These filters are hailed as the worlds most efficient primary filters and in addition to reducing maintenance of secondary systems and duct cleaning they also aid in the recovery of oil from the cooking process for recycling.
